2025 MASERATI GRANCABRIO FOLGORE FIRST LOOK REVIEW: THE WORLD'S FIRST LUXURY ELECTRIC DROP-TOP

The Maserati GranCabrio was still hot off the press when the automaker announced the imminent arrival of the all-electric version, the Maserati GranCabio Folgore. Clearly, the brand is taking its drive to be fully electrified within the next four years very seriously. The new convertible EV will sit alongside its gorgeous gas counterpart in the same way the GranTurismo Folgore is the electric version of the coupe. Maserati proudly states that this is the first electric luxury convertible on the market, and with a gorgeous interior, shapely curves, and a massive 750 horsepower coming from a trio of electric motors, the GranCabrio Folgore isn't here to play games.

When Is The 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Coming Out?

The expected release date for the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is toward the end of 2024, considering the online configurator is already up and running.

2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Estimated Price and Competition

We don't have an official price for the 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore just yet, but given the GranTurismo Folgore coupe is expected to be around $20k more than the base gas model, we can assume the electric convertible will cost upwards of $220k when it arrives.

When it comes to rivals, there aren't many to speak of, since the existence of the Fisker Ronin seems to be in question considering the financial dilemma Fisker finds itself in. We hope the company pulls through, as the $385,000 Ronin may be expensive but promises to be truly exciting. The only other options when it comes to luxury EVs include the Rolls-Royce Spectre and Cadillac Celestiq, neither of which have the option to drop the roof, but both have MSRP figures that will make your eyes water.

New Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Exterior and Colors

We can't deny that the Italian automaker is well-versed in the art of beautiful design, so it's no surprise that the new Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is a convertible masterpiece. It has the same gorgeous proportions as the gas GranCabrio, with a folding fabric roof that's available in Greige, Black, Marine Blue, Titan Grey, or Granata Red. The roof can be operated at speeds of up to 31 mph and opens in 14 seconds - it needs 16 seconds to close. The available palette of exterior colors for the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is extensive, with five standard metallic shades and 27 Fuoriserie colors to choose from.

The 2025 GranCabrio Folgore rides on staggered wheels, with 20-inch items in the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear, and once again, there are four regular and two Fuoriserie wheel designs to choose from. The Folgore gets low rolling resistance tires as standard. You can also change the color of the brake calipers to match the exterior paintwork.

The rest of the electric GranCabrio looks similar to the gas car, with the large oval grille, stand-out trident logo, air intakes, and LED headlights at the front end. The rear is a bit more distinctive, thanks to the lack of exhaust outlets and a charging port on the furthest corner on the left, underneath the taillight cluster. The understated diffuser is still present.

Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Dimensions

The dimensions of the 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore show it's the same size by most metrics as its gas counterpart, although it's about 0.3 inches longer and quite a bit heavier. The latter is due to the electric powertrain and is to be expected for an EV.

2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Powertrain and Performance

The big talking point about the GranCabrio Folgore is the powertrain. Whereas the regular GranCabrio comes only in Trofeo designation and makes 542 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque from its Nettuno V6, the three electric motors in the Folgore put out a smidge over 750 hp and a maximum of 996 lb-ft of torque. MaxBoost will increase outputs to 818 hp for a short burst of potent acceleration. These specs put performance on par with the GranTurismo Folgore, with 0-60 mph coming up in around 2.7 seconds and top speed reached when the needle hits 180 mph.

There are various drive modes on the GranCabrio Folgore, including Max Range, GT, Sport, and Corsa, which are selected via the rotary control on the steering wheel. Max Range is aimed at efficiency and thus limits speed and reduces engine response when the accelerator is pressed. GT is the default mode and suited to daily driving, where power is limited to around 80%. Sport mode uses the available power for maximum performance with a suspension setup that enhances dynamic driving. Corsa is the most extreme and switches to minimal interference from the electronic control systems.

In Corsa mode, the max boost function becomes available for a burst of acceleration. Launch control can be turned on in Corsa or Sport mode. One would expect a car with these outputs and capacities to exude a thrilling sound, but this being an EV, the designers had to engineer a soundtrack worthy of it. Using the typical Maserati V8 sound as a base, the automaker has blended it with digital renderings of the natural acoustic dynamics of the electric motors for a truly unique sound.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The automaker says that range will be between 260 and 277 miles on a charge, but that's on the more generous WLTP cycle. We'd guess it'll be around 250 miles, likely a little less than its electric GranTurismo cousin due to heavier gadgetry needed for the folding top.

Like the GranTurismo Folgore, however, the electric convertible comes with a 92.5-kWh battery (with 83 kWh net) and 800-volt fast charging compatibility. At 270 kW charging speeds, you can add 62 miles in just five minutes, or top up from 20% to 80% capacity in 18 minutes.

2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Interior and Cargo

The interior of the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore is identical to its gas-powered sibling. This translates to a classy, elegant cabin with sufficient space for the front two passengers and just two seats in the rear, naturally with less legroom behind the front seats. The GranCabrio Folgore comes with leather upholstery as standard, available in mostly demure shades, and there's also the sustainable Econyl option, which is a material made from recycled materials. Cabin accents are available in carbon macrotwill, high gloss copper yarn carbon fiber, and two 3D Touch carbon fiber options.

Although a neck warmer is standard on the GranCabrio Folgore, adding ventilation to the already-heated front seats and a wind deflector to avoid in-cabin turbulence will cost extra. You'll also have to spend some money for a full ADAS setup, which includes traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, active lane management, blind spot monitoring, and a surround-view camera, to name a few. A premium Sonus Faber sound system with 19 speakers is on the menu too, as is a head-up display.

Other standard features inside the GranCabrio Folgore are a configurable 12.2-inch digital driver's information display and a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Below this you'll find an 8.8-inch display on which vehicle functions like seat heating and climate control live. Multi-colored ambient lighting is standard.

There isn't much cargo space in the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore; you only get a maximum of 5.3 cubic feet.
